Project Overview

The Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, housing numerous national and regional retailers and providing extended opening times in a comfort controlled environment.

The original roof covering had been installed for some twenty three years, and the membrane had started to suffer from plasticiser migration causing it to become brittle and therefore no longer serviceable as a weatherproof covering. In addition, numerous items of plant had been added over the years, exacerbating the wear and tear on the roof covering by installers and maintenance staff.

The chosen design solution for this project was an overlay waterproofing system com-prising of a mechanically fixed insulation board covered with a waterproofing layer of Alumasc’s Mono – single-ply bituminous membrane.

The application of an overlay system entailed no disruption to the businesses operating within the building below, and the single-layer bituminous membrane allowed for rapid installation, minimising the contractor’s time on site.
